So then, as we have opportunity, let’s do what is good toward all men, and especially toward those who are of the household of the faith.
Galatians 6:10 — New International Version (NIV)

Historical lead-up

In the book of Galatians, the Apostle Paul addresses a community of believers who were facing challenges from false teachings and divisions. He emphasizes the importance of living out the gospel in their daily lives, encouraging them to remain steadfast in their faith and to support one another. This context sets the stage for understanding the call to action that Paul presents in this verse.

Why this verse was written

Paul wrote this letter to the Galatians to remind them of the freedom they have in Christ and to encourage them to live in a way that reflects that freedom. He wanted to address the issues of legalism and division among them, urging them to focus on love and service to one another. This verse serves as a practical application of his teachings, guiding the believers on how to express their faith through good works.

True meaning

In this verse, Paul encourages the Galatians to do good to everyone, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. The key idea here is the call to action—doing good is not just a suggestion but a vital part of living out one’s faith. Paul emphasizes the importance of community and mutual support among believers, highlighting that our actions should reflect our love for God and for each other.

Living it today

This verse challenges us to look for opportunities to do good in our daily lives, whether it’s through acts of kindness, support for those in need, or simply being present for friends and family. It encourages us to prioritize our relationships within the church community, fostering a spirit of unity and love. In prayer, we can ask God to open our eyes to the needs around us and to give us the strength to act on those needs, embodying the love of Christ in our actions.

What follows

Following this verse, Paul continues to discuss the importance of sowing and reaping, reminding the believers that the choices they make have consequences. This reinforces the idea that doing good is not only beneficial for others but also for our own spiritual growth and well-being.
