Nationwide, the average stands at about 65 visits per 100,000 people, an increase from 47 per 100,000 last year. If these numbers continue, this year could see the highest rate of tick bites in several years.
The rise in tick incidents is attributed to a combination of factors including a growing tick population, environmental changes, and increased human activity outdoors during warmer months. Notably, the lone star tick has been moving beyond its traditional range in the Southeast, posing risks not only for Lyme disease but also for other serious conditions such as alpha-gal syndrome, which can trigger severe allergic reactions to certain meats.
State health departments have varying levels of surveillance for tick populations. Some states have implemented active programs to identify and track tick species, while others rely more on human reports of illnesses. This inconsistency can hinder timely responses to emerging tick threats. States like Massachusetts, Missouri, and Oklahoma have expanded their monitoring and public education efforts as tick habitats change. These states have also begun to mandate reporting for alpha-gal syndrome cases.
Experts suggest that milder winters have enabled ticks to remain active longer and spread into new areas. Increased deer populations and altered land use patterns further facilitate encounters between people and ticks. To combat this growing threat, public health officials emphasize the importance of prevention. They recommend using EPA-registered insect repellents, wearing protective clothing in tick-prone areas, and performing thorough checks for ticks after outdoor activities.
The challenge for many states is shifting from merely responding to tick season to adapting to a reality where tick season is extending, and these pests are emerging in regions where they were previously uncommon.
